Pain and Anxiety Management for Cosmetic Treatments

Cosmetic treatments are generally well tolerated, and most patients find that using ice is enough to reduce discomfort. Some treatments include local numbing agents, which has made them much more comfortable than in the past. For patients who are more sensitive to discomfort or feel nervous about procedures, we offer several comfort options.

General Options for Comfort During Cosmetic Treatments

• Ice
Ice is commonly used during cosmetic procedures. It helps minimise discomfort and can also reduce the likelihood of bruising.

• Topical anaesthetic (e.g. EMLA / LMX)
These are creams or ointments applied to the skin before treatment. They work best when applied for around 45 minutes with cling wrap placed over the area to help absorption.

• Local numbing
Local numbing may be used before certain procedures, particularly in more sensitive areas. After local anaesthetic is applied, the area should feel comfortable throughout treatment.

• Happy Gas (Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen mix)
A combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen can be inhaled a few minutes before and during a procedure to help reduce discomfort and ease anxiety.

• Penthrox
An inhaled option that can help patients feel more relaxed and comfortable before and during some procedures.

• Use of Cannula
When a cannula is used, a small amount of local anaesthetic is applied at the entry point. This means the patient will not feel the initial entry, and overall comfort during treatment is generally very good.

Anxiety Relief During Cosmetic Treatments

For patients who are particularly anxious, needle-phobic, or worried about potential discomfort, a mild anti-anxiety option may be available and can be taken around 30 minutes before the procedure.
If this option is used, patients will need to arrange transport home, as driving afterward is not permitted.
