What is LED Phototherapy?
LED stands for “Light Emitting Diode” The most well known brand of LED phototherapy is Omnilux. In LEDs, a current is pass through small semi-conductors causing light to be emitted. For skin rejuvenation, light is emitted through specific wavelength bands.
Different wavelengths may be used to target different skin conditions, including acne or for aging skin treatment. The wavelengths will be targeting different depths in the skin and will cause different effects.
There is no downtime, no tissue damage and no side effects
How does LED Phototherapy Work?
Certain wavelengths of LED light will induce changes in skin which will treat certain conditions.
Red Light
The red light wavelength of LED induces a mild inflammation in the targeted skin cells which causes an immune response that aids in regeneration. THis can help to rejuvenate skin and also to aid healing of the skin.
It is used for
* skin rejuvenation and
* to speed the healing process after procedures eg laser treatments, chemical peels, skin needling and injectables
Blue Light
The blue light wavelength of LED targets porphyrins (which are the product of P. Acnes, the bacteria associated with acne), producing an oxygen free radical that destroys the bacteria.
in acne treatment, the red and blue light are used together, the blue light reducing bacteria counts and the red light aiding healing
Is LED like laser or IPL?
LED is different to laser and IPL.
It is non-invasive. Therefore requiring no downtime or recovery time after treatment
It is not thermal. There is no heat energy or tissue damage using LED
It is continuous light rather than pulsed light
It is used for different purposes to IPL and laser
What Skin Conditions can LED be used for?
* Acne (blue light and red light)
* Skin rejuvenation (red light)
* To treat inflammation (red light)
* To aid healing eg after laser (red light)
* Both lights can be used for PDT (photodynamic therapy) which is very different to LED phototherapy and requires downtime
How many Treatments of LED are Required?
For Skin Rejuvenation
The more treatments the patient has, the better the results. Treatments should be weekly to monthly.
We recommend incorporating LED into your regular monthly facial plan.
For acne
Blue and Red light LED should be used twice weekly for 8 weeks and then weekly for 4 weeks and then as part of your monthly facial treatment
After skin treatments
This will depend on which treatment. We offer a complimentary LED treatments after all ablative laser treatments
