We interview Dr Toshi about one of his favourite procedures, long threadlifting
Can you please explain the entire procedure of a thread lift, from start to finish?
A thread lift involves placing fine, dissolvable threads under the skin to lift and reposition sagging tissue. After carefully marking the face according to individual needs and numbing
the treatment area with local anaesthetic, the threads are inserted through a strategic tinyentry point using a fine cannula. The barbs on the threads gently catch the soft tissue,
allowing me to reposition and lift the skin. Once in place, the threads also stimulate collagen production, improving skin quality over time. This means you see an immediate lifting effect as well as longer-term skin rejuvenation.
How long does the procedure take from start to finish?
The thread lift procedure itself usually takes around 30–60 minutes, depending on how many areas (or vectors) are being treated. Including preparation, a thorough explanation of the procedure, and aftercare guidance, patients typically spend about 1.5 to 2 hours in the clinic from start to finish.
Do you have to do your entire face, or can you focus on a particular area (e.g., jowls)?
You don’t need to treat the whole face. Many patients choose a focused lift. For example, just the jowls, jawline, or midface. The treatment is highly customisable to your needs. That said, the best and most natural results often come from treating the face as a whole. Sometimes, improving one area also means gently supporting the surrounding areas for balance and harmony. Think of it like adjusting one cushion on a couch, sometimes you need to straighten the nearby ones too, so the whole setting looks balanced.
Are there any side effects to getting a thread lift?
Yes. A thread lift is a minimally invasive medical procedure, and like any procedure, it requires specific skill and care. Some mild side effects can occur during the settling-in period,
such as temporary bruising, swelling, tenderness, or a feeling of tightness when moving the face. Occasionally, you may notice slight dimpling of the skin or tethering of the tissue,
which usually improves within a few days. Serious risks are rare but can include infection or thread displacement. Choosing an experienced practitioner significantly reduces these risks and ensures natural-looking outcome.
Is getting a thread lift safe?
Thread treatments are medical procedures and should only be performed by trained and experienced practitioners. The threads used are medical-grade and regulated for use in Australia. Safety and outcomes depend on individual assessment, correct technique, and appropriate patient selection, all of which are addressed during consultation.
When getting a thread lift, is there anything you can’t do? (e.g., no exercising afterwards)
Yes. For the first one to two weeks, it’s important to let the threads settle into place. During this time, I recommend avoiding vigorous exercise, face massages or facials, sleeping face down, and opening your mouth too wide (for example during dental work or excessive yawning). Following these simple precautions help the threads stay in the correct position
and ensures you get the best, longest-lasting result.
What is the after-care when it comes to thread lifts?
Aftercare is simple but important. For the first couple of nights, it helps to keep your head elevated while sleeping. I also recommend avoiding excessive facial
movements for about one to two weeks, so the threads can settle comfortably in place. Pain relief maybe needed, but blood thinning medication should be avoided. A follow-up
appointment at the clinic is part of the process, allowing us to check your progress and ensure healing is smooth.
What is the downtime when getting a thread lift?
Compared to facelift surgery, the downtime with a thread lift is minimal. Most people feel comfortable enough to return to work by the fourth day. Personally, when I have had my
threads done, I was back at work the very next day. However, I usually advise my patients to allow at least three days off if possible and to carefully follow the aftercare guidelines for one to two weeks as we discussed earlier for the best outcome.
What is the starting price?
The cost of a thread lift depends on how many threads are used and which areas are being treated. At The Manse Clinic, prices usually start from around $4,500, but the final cost can be higher depending on the complexity and the number of threads required.
How long do the effects of a thread lift last for?
Results generally last around 12 to 18 months. The threads themselves dissolve over 9 to 12 months, but the boost in collagen production continues to support and improve the skin for longer. In some cases, the effects have been shown to last up to two years.
Can you get more than one thread lift in your life?
Absolutely. Many patients repeat the treatment every one to two years as part of their maintenance plan. It’s also one of my preferred procedures personally, and I choose to have it
done every two years.
What is usually the age bracket of people that come and get a thread lift?
Most patients are in their mid 30s to 50s. A thread lift is often chosen by those who are noticing early to moderate sagging but aren’t ready for, or simply don’t want, surgery.
Are thread lifts a relatively new procedure? Where did it originate?
Thread lift procedure has been around since the 1990s, but with advances in technology, the materials and techniques have become far more refined over time. Today’s market-leading threads mostly originate from South Korea, which is widely regarded as the global leader in cosmetic trends and a hub of innovation in this field.
