Dermal Fillers for Chin

Chin fillers are a very popular treatment in our Sydney clinic. Many patients have a recessive chin or a lower third of their chin which can be improved. The chin is also important for the appearance of a defined jawline.

Chin fillers can be injected for 2 purposes:

  1. To look younger
  2. To look more beautiful.

As women age, our skull rotates, with the chin moving backward, the bone and soft tissue in the chin area dissolves, leaving us with reduced structural support in that area. This has a flow on effect to our neck and jowls. It is easy to replace the structural support that has been lost with dermal filler

Some people were born with great a great profile including a well projected chin, and others were born with underdeveloped or recessive chins whose appearance could be improved. For those who weren’t born with the perfect chin, it is simple to just inject them with chin fillers to improve the appearance.

Chin fillers can improve:

  • Size of the chin: It is very easy to enlarge patients chins with dermal filler
  • Length of the chinSome patients are too short in the chin. this is easily remedied with dermal filler injections to lengthen the chin
  • Projection of the chinIt is very common for patients to present with recessive chins on profile. Dermal filler can be injected to make a stronger more projected chin
  • Shape of the chinSome patients need more length, width, more angular, less angular chins. Some patients think their chins are too pointy, these chins can be made more round. Some patients think that their chins are too square and we can make these look more round. Some patients want a more pointy, angular appearance to their chin. The patient will be assessed and the doctor will have a discussion with the patient about their anatomy, and how it can be improved.
  • Skin of the chin: this can be improved with dermal filler or skin boosters
  • Aging chins: as we age, the skull rotates and bone and sof tissue dissolve causing reduction of  structural support of the overlying tissue. This structural support can be replaced with dermal filler
  • Symmetry of the chin: asymmetry of the chin can be improved with dermal filler treatment

Treatment with Chin Fillers

Choosing the dose

Often patients will ask. “how much chin filler do I need?”. The dose required for chin filling is very variable. Some patients will be satisfied with 1ml, others will need 5 mls to get the results that they want

The injector will assess the face and decide on the best dose after taking a history and examining the patient. If a patient has a history of complications with dermal fillers, or if their budget is small or if they want a more subtle result, then a smaller dose might be chosen to start with.

With chins, the most we would consider injecting in 1 session would be 4 mls. If more is required, another session may be required

Typically, we will inject 1-3mls at a first treatment then review the patient at a month. If they said ” I liked the swelling after the last treatment and was disappointed when it went away” then I would recommend them to have a further treatment, and repeat this until they don’t like the swelling afterwards.

Pain relief during treatment for chin fillers

  • A numbing cream (eg EMLA or LMX ) may be applied to the area prior to the treatment (45 minutes prior is ideal) Glad wrap may be used over the numbing cream to increase its effect.
  • If a cannula is used, local anaesthetic is used prior to the cannula being introduced into the skin
  • There is local anaesthetic in the dermal filler.
  • Ice is always used to decrease pain and to reduce the risk of bruising.
  • Nitrous oxide (happy gas) is available for patients to use

What happens during the chin filler treatment itself?

The face will be cleaned with alcohol and chlorhexidine.

Ice will be applied to the area briefly before treatment The injector will inject using a very fine needle. Then pressure with gauze will be applied.

If a cannula is used, a small injection of local anaesthetic may be injected into the skin and then a fine needle makes a small hole in the skin where the cannula is inserted.

How will I look after?

There may be redness and swelling. the chin may have a more “sharp” look about it, but when the swelling goes down after 2 days, the sharpness will reduce and give way to a more natural appearance. Patients may like the swelling in the first couple of days

Side effects /risks

  • Bruising occurs in a significant number of cases.
  • Swelling in the injection area will occur. This will laser for 48 hours
  • Asymmetry: Sometimes one side is better treated than the other, this is usually because the patient is asymmetrical to start with.
  • Infection is a very rare complication, but always a possibility when the needle goes into the skin.
  • Necrosis (blood vessel being blocked, interfering with blood supply to the skin) is very rare. This could lead to scarring
  • Need for further treatmentIt may take several syringes of product to get to where the patient wants to be.
  • PainThe area can be quite painful after treatment

After chin fillers

How will I look after chin fillers?

There may be redness and swelling. The effect of the dermal filler will be obvious immediately

Most of the swelling from the dermal filler will have resolved by 2-3 days after the procedure. There may be a small amount of swelling for even 2-4 weeks after the procedure.

The result should be reviewed by the patient and the injector in 4 weeks or more and assessed whether further chin filler is recommended to achieve the ultimate results.

Instructions for care afterward

  • No makeup for 4 hours
  • No heavy exercise that day
  • No acid face products for 24 hours
  • No spas no saunas, no hot yoga for 1 week post treatment

What if I get asymmetry at some time before the 4 week point? Do I call the clinic?

No. No need to call the clinic. Sometimes asymmetry will occur because one side is more swollen or bruised. Usually it will right itself by the time of the review appointment. If it doesn’t, then it can be examined at the review appointment. There is no point in coming in early for treatment of asymmetry as there is often swelling associated and so the final result cannot be seen until at least 4 weeks. Treating asymmetry too early could lead to further asymmetry

How long will the treatment last?

The answer to this is very individual and depends on the patient’s anatomy, metabolism, the dose, the placement, the product etc. Typically with our most commonly used dermal filler: If the patient is happy with the results at 1 month (ie there has been adequate fill) they should be treated at 6 months, then at 6 months and then once yearly. If the patient is not satisfied with the results at 1 month (ie more dermal filler is required to obtain the results that they desire), then further dermal filler should be injected every 1-3 months until the desired appearance has been reached, and then the patient should have treatment at 6 months, then 6 months, then once yearly

Cost of dermal filler in chin:

Cost is per syringe. Number of syringes required depends so much on where the patient starts in terms of their chin anatomy and also depends on how big a change they would like to achieve.
